Abstract

Performance of two surface water minor irrigation schemes namely Munippara and Poolani of Thrissurdistrict of Kerala were assessed using the performance indicators of Relative Water Supply (RWS), RelativeIrrigation Supply (RIS), Standardized Gross value of Production (SGVP), SGVP per cropped area andSGVP per unit irrigation supply. High Relative Water Supply (RWS) values of both schemes indicate thatwater is abundant for crop production in both minor irrigation schemes. Relative irrigation supply (RIS)values show that the distribution of water is better in Poolani scheme compared to Munippara scheme. In thecommand areas of both schemes along with irrigation, well recharge also is taking place and sustains thedrinking water availability. Better participation of beneficiaries in irrigation water management activities ofPoolani scheme ensures adequate and timely water availability compared to Munippara scheme. Furtherscope for improvements in the performance of the schemes is observed through careful planning of thewater distribution of the schemes so that more area can be brought under irrigation. This has to be implementedthrough beneficiary participation approach.
