Abstract

One hundred and thirty five chilli landraces belonging to Capsicum annuum, C. chinense and C. frutescensspecies were analyzed for 20 unit characters. Temporal and spatial gene expression patterns of anthocyaninpigmentation and pubescence were analyzed which revealed species specific fixation of alleles and differentialresponse of each species to the external environment. Relative fixation of alleles across species was used toframe taxonomic key based on seed and seedling characters which will be helpful for species alignment inthe vegetative stage and will be complementary to the existing key. The relationship between C. chinenseand C. frutescens was evident from many phenotypic character states with similar expression patterns inboth the species.
