Abstract

Pitting disease of banana, causing characteristic concave pits on matured fruits and blast like/eye shaped lesions with dark brown margin on transitory leaf and pseudostem, resulted economic loss by reducing the market value. The causal organism isolated from cv. Nendran was identified as Pyricularia angulata based on cultural, morphological and molecular (NCBI accession No. PX248378; PX222334) characteristics. The study revealed that Banana dextrose agar supported maximum mycelial growth and sporulation, whereas Banana leaf agar performed poorly. Field trails demonstrated physical measures like, bunch covering with polyethylenebag combined with transitory leaf removal significantly reduced the percent disease index (PDI; 28.70) with respect to control (57.41). In field trials to control pseudostem infection, spraying of Tebuconazole 50% + Trifloxystrobin 25% WG (0.14%), before the onset of monsoon, was the most effective (PDI: 13.1; percent reduction over control: 84.51).
